TCN Advises Ogun State on Protecting Power Installations and Securing Right-of-Way Rights

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Benin Region carried out a sensitisation programme in Ogun State to inform host communities about the importance of protecting transmission infrastructure from vandalism and of reporting suspicious activity near power facilities promptly.

During the event, a TCN statement highlighted the risks of constructing buildings within transmission line Right of Way (RoW) corridors, stressing the potential harm to both offenders and the power network.

Speaking on behalf of the General Manager, Benin Region, Charles Iwuamadi, and Assistant General Manager, Mathew Ariyibi, explained that the outreach was necessary because transmission lines cross many rural communities where vandalism and encroachment remain serious threats.

He added that community members are often the first to notice unusual activity around transmission facilities and urged residents to report such incidents quickly to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

He also said that TCN is working with local vigilantes and community leaders to monitor installations in remote areas, emphasizing that active community participation is essential for protecting the nation’s power infrastructure.

Principal Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Abaniyo Otaru, described vandalism as the deliberate destruction of public infrastructure vital to national development. He noted that attacks on transmission facilities disrupt electricity supply, weaken economic activity, and create opportunities for criminal activity.

“These lines carry up to 330 kilovolts of electricity. Tampering with them endangers lives and destabilises power supply,” Otaru warned, calling on community leaders to support efforts to protect transmission installations.
