The Taraba State Government has announced the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state amid security concerns that could jeopardise the region’s peace and stability.
The directive was issued on Friday in a statement signed on behalf of the governor by the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Barrister Gebon Timothy Katars.
Government officials said the decision follows credible security reports indicating threats that could undermine the peace currently enjoyed by residents of the state.
To address the situation, the state government plans to establish a new task force that will oversee security and safety in the mining sector.
The task force, the statement said, will ensure that mining operations resume only after the identified security threats have been effectively addressed.
The government also directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to enforce strict compliance with the suspension order within their jurisdictions.
Authorities warned that any violations of the directive should be reported immediately to the nearest security agency, stressing that offenders would face serious consequences.
In addition, the government revealed that it has arranged to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the state government emphasised that mining activities would only be allowed to resume under a secure and properly regulated environment.
Residents were urged to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activities.
The suspension takes immediate effect.
