Tanker Explosion Causes Petrol Station Fire in Umuahia

The Aka God petrol station in Nkwoegwu town, Umuahia North LGA, Abia State, was destroyed by a fire that broke out on Sunday night.

The blaze began at about 6:30 pm and burned for several hours.

Investigators say the fire was triggered by an explosion from a loaded petrol tanker inside the facility.

Although no lives were lost, the incident caused millions of naira worth of damage to the petrol station’s inventory and partially affected surrounding property.

Initial attempts by local youths and other residents to extinguish the flames proved ineffective, as the tanker’s fire sent intense heat and flames into the surrounding area.

Firefighters from the Abia State Fire Service were alerted and arrived on the scene around 7:00 pm, deploying their equipment.

Their intervention prevented the fire from spreading to nearby private residences, a medical facility, and other structures.

Witnesses from Nkwoegwu and Ohuhu, Umuahia North LGA, expressed relief that no one was injured but lamented the loss of the local investment.

Senior Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Homeland Security, Fire and Emergency Services, Chukwunenye Alajemba, said on Sunday night that the rapid response of his office helped prevent the fire from destroying nearby homes.
