Onuminya Innocent in Sokoto
Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal announced that he will gradually step back from active local politics and has named Faruk Malami‑Yabo as his chosen successor in the Senate. The announcement was made on Friday at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting in Sokoto, where party loyalists, community leaders, youth representatives and political associates were in attendance.
Tambuwal praised Malami‑Yabo as “a committed, capable and visionary leader” who possesses the competence and integrity required to sustain progressive leadership in Sokoto State and beyond. He said the endorsement reflects a desire to strengthen democratic values and ensure continuity in governance.
In his remarks, the former governor stressed that experienced leaders must deliberately create space for emerging voices and fresh ideas in Nigeria’s political arena. “Leadership is not about personal ambition alone; it is about continuity, service and preparing others to carry the torch,” he said.
Tambuwal expressed full confidence in Malami‑Yabo’s capacity to provide purposeful leadership and to unite the people for greater progress. He added that stepping back from frontline local politics does not mean retirement from public service, but rather a shift toward mentorship, guidance and nation‑building initiatives.
Malami‑Yabo responded to the endorsement by thanking Tambuwal for the confidence placed in him. He described the former governor as “a political mentor, bridge‑builder and symbol of selfless leadership,” and pledged to uphold values of inclusiveness, accountability and people‑oriented governance.
Political observers have described the development as a significant moment in Sokoto’s political landscape, signalling a generational shift and a renewed focus on leadership succession and unity. The event concluded with stakeholders urging sustained peace, cooperation and support for nurturing competent young leaders.
Participants said the move should advance democratic ideals and socio‑economic development across the state, as Tambuwal transitions into a mentorship role aimed at empowering young Nigerians to take an active part in governance and leadership.
