On Monday, the Mokwa–New Bussa Road in Niger State was blocked by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, creating confusion for residents, motorists and commuters in the area.
Hundreds of the suspected terrorists rode motorcycles and set up a barricade on the road near Zurgurma in Mashegu Local Government Area, disrupting traffic and forcing travelers to find alternative routes.
Sources also reported that the armed group entered Zurgurma and surrounding communities, instilling fear among residents and prompting many motorists to abandon the road out of safety concerns.
The incident left the area in disarray as residents sought safety, while economic and social activities were temporarily halted.
SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident and said a joint security team responded quickly to the threat.
He said the swift action by security personnel forced the suspected terrorists to flee before causing further harm, and that the attackers retreated into the nearby Ibbi Forest after the deployment of forces.
He added, “Security agencies have continued to monitor the area and are taking necessary measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents and road users.”
Armed groups continue to target communities and major transportation routes despite ongoing security operations, underscoring the persistent security challenges in parts of Niger State.
