Suspected Boko Haram insurgents are alleged to have attacked a school in Borno State, abducting an unspecified number of pupils in a raid that has sent the local community into panic.

Preliminary reports say the armed men entered the school grounds on Friday, firing sporadically into the air before taking students to an unknown destination.

The exact number of abducted pupils remains unconfirmed as authorities continue to assess the situation.

According to Daily Trust, a local resident who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons described how the attackers arrived in large numbers and overwhelmed the school’s perimeter before security forces could respond.

“We just heard gunshots and people started running. Before we knew it, they had taken some of the children away,” the source said.

Security forces, including troops and local vigilante groups, were deployed to the area shortly after the incident to pursue the assailants and potentially rescue the abducted pupils.
