Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered that all victims of Saturday’s building collapse in Abuja’s Gudu district receive free medical care. Rescue teams extracted a survivor from the debris more than nine hours after a three‑storey structure collapsed, killing five people.

The building, located behind Gudu Market and still under construction, fell at 8:30 am on Saturday, trapping an unknown number of workers—most of them labourers—under the wreckage.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, who visited the scene, personally tended to the survivor immediately after he was pulled from the rubble before he was transported to a hospital for further treatment. She confirmed that Wike’s directive for free treatment was already being implemented.

The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) reported that by Saturday evening it had recovered 16 people from the debris. Five of those rescued did not survive, while the remaining 11 were taken to the Federal Medical Centre Abuja, Asokoro District Hospital and Maitama Hospital for care.

Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs for FEMD, said that rescue operations were still underway, with several agencies working at the site simultaneously. The teams included the National Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the FCT Police Command, the Nigerian Army, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FCT Emergency Medical Services, and health officers from Wuse District Hospital.

Residents gathered around the cordoned area as responders continued to search the rubble for any survivors.
