Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been linked with the Algeria national team job only a few hours after the Desert Foxes were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Franco-Malian coach has reportedly attracted interest from the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which is looking at possible coaching options after Algeria’s disappointing defeat to Switzerland.

French outlet Foot Mercato reported that the FAF made contact with Chelle because of his impressive work in African football. However, Nigeria appear determined to keep their coach, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) having secured his long-term future.

Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025, has reportedly agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with Nigeria until 2030. The new agreement also comes with improved financial terms and extra responsibilities, making it much harder for another African football power to lure him away.

Why Algeria want Eric Chelle

Algeria’s interest in Chelle did not come as a surprise. The former Mali coach has built a strong reputation across African football over the last few years.

One big reason behind Algeria’s interest is Chelle’s knowledge of football on the continent. Chelle guided Mali to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations before taking over the Super Eagles and earned praise for organising disciplined, difficult-to-beat teams.

He also strengthened his reputation when Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFCON. The Super Eagles produced one of their most complete performances under Chelle, frustrating the Desert Foxes before taking their chances in attack. That victory reportedly convinced many within Algerian football that Chelle possessed the tactical qualities needed to rebuild their national team.

Another factor is his previous experience in Algeria. Before accepting Nigeria’s offer in January 2025, Chelle briefly managed MC Oran in the Algerian Ligue 1. During that period, he became familiar with the country’s football culture, domestic league and several local players, giving him an advantage over coaches with no experience in Algerian football.

Reports also suggest that dissatisfaction with current coach Vladimir Petković has increased after Algeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Some of the criticism focused on tactical decisions, including the use of an experimental “false nine” system during important matches, leaving the federation to consider possible alternatives.

Although Algeria have shown interest, no official announcement has been made regarding Petković’s future or any formal appointment process involving Chelle.

Reasons Chelle is expected to remain with Nigeria

The strongest reason for Chelle to reject Algeria is the long-term project he has already started in Nigeria.

His reported contract extension until 2030 provides financial stability and shows the confidence that both the NFF and NSC have in his work. While the exact salary and contract clauses have not been made public, the improved deal is believed to place him among the better-paid national team coaches in Africa. Walking away from such security after only a short period would make little sense.

Another major attraction is the expanded role he now enjoys. Chelle is no longer focused only on the senior Super Eagles. He has also been handed responsibility for the Olympic Eagles, Nigeria’s Under-23 men’s team. That gives him influence over the country’s football development from the youth level to the senior national team.

The opportunity to qualify Nigeria for both the Olympic Games and the 2030 FIFA World Cup offers Chelle the chance to build an impressive coaching record. Success with one of Africa’s biggest football nations could also strengthen his long-term ambition of managing in France’s Ligue 1.

Perhaps the biggest reason to stay is the quality of Nigeria’s squad.

The Super Eagles have arguably Africa’s most talented attackers with stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Femi Azeez all in their prime years. Beyond those established names, Chelle has continued to monitor several emerging Nigerian players across Europe and other leagues who could strengthen the national team in the coming years.

That blend of experienced stars and exciting young talents offers Chelle a realistic chance of competing for AFCON titles and qualifying for the 2030 World Cup.

Leading the Super Eagles is among the most prestigious jobs in African football for a coach still building his international reputation. With a long-term contract, greater authority and a squad capable of winning major trophies, Nigeria currently offers Chelle a stronger football project than an Algeria side going through a period of transition.
