Stanley Iheanacho has made a blistering start to life back at FC Midtjylland, scoring in each of the Danish club’s first three pre-season matches against Lillestrøm, Malmö and Silkeborg, Afrik Foot reports.

In doing so, the 21-year-old Nigerian striker has quietly opened a conversation about what he must do to catch the eye of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.

Iheanacho returned to Midtjylland this summer on a four-year deal, following a two-season stint at Portuguese third-tier side CD Mafra, where he finished last campaign as the Liga 3 top scorer with 14 goals.

The journey has been one of steady development, leaving Nigeria for Denmark as a teenager, fighting for minutes at Mafra before breaking through as the division’s most prolific striker, and now earning his shot at the Danish Superliga.

Midtjylland’s sporting director, Kristian Bach Bak, praised the forward’s development, noting that Stanley “matured” during his Portuguese spell.

The striker has been characteristically. Quizzed about his football idol, he pointed directly to the man he dreams of one day playing alongside.

“I look up to Victor Osimhen,” he said in an interview with Midtjylland’s official website.

“He is a fantastic guy, a fighter who has had to fight his way out of poverty. His warrior mentality is inspiring, and when he plays, he gives everything — he is so hungry to score goals.

“I can see a lot of things in him in myself. I watch his clips and all the interviews he gives. I try to learn from him, and my dream is to one day play with him.”

The comparison is instructive not just as a statement of admiration but as a window into how Iheanacho sees himself: direct, hungry, relentless, built on a foundation of physical intensity and goalscoring instinct rather than technical finesse or creative flair.

What Iheanacho said about his Midtjylland return

The striker’s words in pre-season have been focused on the present rather than the future.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity, and I am trying to push myself throughout the start of the season to achieve my goals and show that I deserve a central place in the team,” the 21-year-old said.

On what he learned from Portugal, Iheanacho said he worked on his positioning in the box and deep runs.

His pre-season return has built on the five consecutive goals he scored at the end of last season at Mafra, and Midtjylland’s coaching staff will have noted not just the goals but the manner in which they were scored.

What Stanley Iheanacho must do to earn Eric Chelle’s attention

The route from FC Midtjylland to the Super Eagles is a possible one that has been documented. Paul Onuachu walked it, scoring 65 goals in 149 appearances before building the career that eventually made him the Turkish Super Lig’s Golden Boot winner and Nigeria’s top scorer in Europe last season.

Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika also used Midtjylland as the springboard for bigger moves that brought them into Chelle’s consideration.

The Danish Superliga has consistently proven itself as a credible development environment for Nigerian talent, and Chelle, who has shown a willingness to look beyond the top-five European leagues for players who are performing rather than simply holding high-profile contracts, will most likely be aware of Iheanacho’s name.

The first thing Iheanacho must do is produce the kind of sustained goalscoring consistency that cannot be ignored.

Pre-season goals are encouraging, but ultimately won’t do much. He must carry that form into the competitive season and post numbers in the Danish Superliga and Europa League that make his case for international consideration self-sufficient.

The second requirement is to develop his all-around game as a striker. His aerial dominance must improve, his link-up play must sharpen, and his decision-making in the final third under physical pressure must become more consistent.

Chelle’s Nigeria plays with high intensity, and the attackers who flourish in that system are ones who can hold the ball under pressure, make intelligent runs and finish efficiently when chances arrive.

The third element is the Osimhen factor, not as a comparison but as an aspiration.

Iheanacho’s dream of one day playing alongside the Super Eagles striker is a powerful motivational framework, but the most direct route to that shared pitch is not wishing for it.

It is becoming the kind of Nigerian striker who earns a call-up on merit, forces Chelle’s hand through sheer weight of evidence, and arrives in the Super Eagles camp ready to compete rather than develop.
