Kingsley Ehizibue’s four-year spell at Udinese has come to an end after the club and the 31-year-old defender failed to reach an agreement over a contract extension, Afrik Foot reports.

Ehizibue delivered another reliable campaign for the Friulani in 2025-26, scoring two goals in 32 league games as Udinese secured a 10th-place finish in Serie A, narrowly missing out on European qualification.

His season featured standout individual moments, including back-to-back goal contributions against Lazio and Torino, with his strike against the latter earning him a Man-of-the-Match award.

Despite Udinese boss Kosta Runjaic’s evident desire to retain him, the financial realities of squad planning won. As per Tutto Udinese, the Italian club are close to completing a move for Heidenheim full-back Omar Traoré as his replacement, signalling that the decision to part ways with Ehizibue was a permanent one.

Born in Munich to Nigerian parents and raised in the Netherlands, Ehizibue remains uncapped at senior international level despite receiving his first Super Eagles invitation back in March 2020.

He has only ever played for the Netherlands at the youth level, never at the senior level, meaning the door to a Super Eagles debut remains technically open even if he’s in his thirties.

Two clubs best placed to sign Ehizibue after his Udinese exit

1. Watford

Watford have spent recent seasons attempting to engineer a return to the Premier League, and a club aiming for promotion requires precisely the kind of experienced, tactically disciplined option that Ehizibue brings.

After four seasons of consistent football in Italy’s top-flight league, his quality and intelligence are what a Championship side will be looking for.

A free transfer for a player of his calibre is one that Championship clubs prioritise, and Ehizibue’s versatility across right-back and right wing-back positions gives any incoming manager tactical flexibility that very few free agents can offer.

2. PEC Zwolle

It was at Zwolle that Ehizibue made his breakthrough in professional football, playing over 130 games and honing his craft before sealing a move to Bundesliga side FC Koln.

A return to the club where his career began would offer him a stable, low-pressure environment in the Eredivisie, a league he already understands intimately, in a country where he spent his formative years.

For a 31-year-old assessing the next and possibly final significant chapter of his career, the comfort and familiarity of Zwolle carries genuine appeal, even if the competitive level represents a step down from Serie A.

The decision between the two ultimately comes down to what Ehizibue prioritises at this stage of his career – A new ambition and a fresh challenge in England, or stability and legacy in the country that shaped him as a footballer.

Watford offers a higher ceiling, while PEC Zwolle offers the more poetic ending.
