Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has expressed his desire to stay at Trabzonspor despite growing interest from Fulham and West Ham United, Afrik Foot reports.
The 22-year-old centre-back joined from Austrian side Wolfsberger in January for €5.5 million, and went on to make 21 appearances across all competitions for Fatih Tekke’s side, contributing three goals and one assist while playing a key role in Trabzonspor’s Turkish Cup triumph.
Nwaiwu’s performances have garnered attention from clubs across the top-five leagues. Fulham have seen a €20 million offer swiftly rejected, while West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen have entered the conversation.

Trabzonspor will be competing in the UEFA Conference League next season, offering Nwaiwu a platform to continue his development at a steady pace.
Regular first-team football and the continuation of a settled environment in which he has already thrived are the conditions that have shaped him into one of Africa’s finest defenders, enjoying a rapid rise over the past eighteen months – from Enyimba in the NPFL to the brink of a Premier League transfer in less than two years.

— Naija Ballers (@9ja_Ballers) June 26, 2026The situation at Craven Cottage adds another layer to his reluctance. Fulham already have Joachim Andersen, Jorge Cuenca, Issa Diop and Calvin Bassey competing for centre-back positions, and that offers no guarantee of the regular first-team minutes Nwaiwu has thrived on at Trabzonspor.
The prospect of arriving as a €20 million signing only to find himself rotating in and out of a congested backline is precisely the kind of stagnation that could undo the momentum he has carefully built over the past two years.

“I have an ongoing contract with Trabzonspor, so I need to go back and continue my path with my club,” the defender told a Turkish television channel, as revealed by Footy Africa.
“Yes, that is my club, and I am a contracted player there. Whatever happens from now on happens.”
The stance aligns perfectly with Trabzonspor’s position. The Turkish club have rejected both Fulham’s €20 million approach and earlier advances, insisting that only an offer in the region of €35 million to €40 million would prompt serious discussion.

The decision to remain at Trabzonspor is not just the right call for Nwaiwu’s club career, but also for his future in the Nigerian National team.
Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers campaign begins in September, and Eric Chelle will be watching his options at centre-back closely in the coming months.
A Nwaiwu who enters next season as a European competition regular at Trabzonspor, building on the Unity Cup experience he earned this summer and the Turkish Cup triumph of last season, has a far more compelling case for a starting berth than one navigating a difficult adaptation to the Premier League from the periphery of Fulham’s squad rotation, alongside the demands of a new coach following Marco Silva’s exit.
