Super Eagles and Zimbabwe’s Warriors Compete in Unity Cup Showdown

The Nigeria Super Eagles will face Zimbabwe’s Warriors in the opening match of the 2026 Unity Cup tonight at Charlton Athletic Stadium (The Valley) in London, with kickoff at 7.30 pm.

In their last encounter during the 2026 World Cup qualifying cycle, the two sides drew both home and away, in Uyo and Huye, Rwanda. Nigeria’s 0‑0 draw in Uyo was a narrow escape, as the team needed the result to steady its faltering campaign. Both teams ultimately failed to qualify; South Africa secured the group’s sole spot, while DR Congo beat Nigeria on penalties in the playoffs for Africa’s inter‑confederation spot in Mexico, earning the continent’s 10th World Cup berth for next month in North America.

Tonight’s match is less consequential. The four‑nation Unity Cup is an invitational friendly tournament, and Nigeria enters as the defending champions.

Head coach Eric Chelle has rested most of his first‑team regulars for recent friendlies against Poland and Portugal, so he will rely on a new set of players for this clash.

Among the likely starters is Francis Uzoho, the newly crowned Cypriot champion with Omonia Nicosia, who could take the helm in goal in the absence of Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon.

Uzoho, Nigeria’s first‑choice goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, hinted at his readiness during yesterday’s pre‑match press conference.

Twenty players participated in yesterday’s final training session, including goalkeepers Uzoho, Arthur Okonkwo and Michael Atata. Defenders were Igoh Ogbu, Chibueze Oputa, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Obinna Igboke, Tijani Al Ameen and Elias Ochobi. Midfielders Alhassan Yusuf, Tochukwu Nnadi, Samson Tijani, Aderemi Adeoye, Junior Ayobami and Tosin Oyedokun were also involved. Forwards Terem Moffi, Philip Otele, Rafiu Durosinmi, Owen Oseni and Femi Azeez were available for selection.

After the Nigeria–Zimbabwe match, Jamaica and India will play on Wednesday, with the winners meeting in the final.
