US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said the Strait of Hormuz will be opened one way or the other as soon as an agreement with Iran is reached.
Rubio made the comment on Monday during a gaggle with reporters at his multi‑nation diplomatic tour, stating that no country in the world supports Iran’s self‑imposed tolling system.
“Strait of Hormuz is going to be opened one way or the other. What’s happening there is unlawful. It’s illegal. It’s unsustainable for the world. It’s unacceptable. The Russians are not in favour of a tolling system,” he said.
“The Chinese are not in favour of a tolling system. I mean, there’s no country in the world that’s in favour of a tolling system, except the regime in Iran,” Rubio added.
Speaking about the emerging potential deal between the US and Iran, Rubio said that while a number of regional leaders support a preliminary draft, it will take a couple of days to reach an agreement.
“The president had a very important, I think, historic call just a couple days ago with a number of leaders from the region. I think there’s strong alignment and agreement on what a preliminary draft should look like,” Rubio said.
