The Enugu State Government has denied reports that circulated on social media claiming that innocent residents were attacked in Awgu, Awgu Council Area.
State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, issued a statement in Enugu on Monday, asserting that no such incident occurred anywhere in Awgu or elsewhere in the state.
Agbo called the allegations a deliberate fabrication by individuals intent on misleading the public and generating unnecessary panic.
He added that residents of Awgu and other Enugu communities are conducting their lawful activities peacefully, with no security breaches of the type alleged.
“We wish to state unequivocally that no such incident occurred. The report is fake, baseless, and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” the commissioner said.
He urged the public to ignore the misinformation and refrain from spreading unverified claims that could cause fear and confusion.
“The administration of Gov. Peter Mbah has made security a top priority and continues to invest heavily in measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the state,” Agbo said.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals, apparently uncomfortable with the prevailing peace, security, and stability in Enugu State, would resort to fabricating falsehoods,” he added. “They engage in falsehood in a desperate attempt to score cheap political points at the expense of Ndi Enugu and the state’s hard‑earned reputation as one of the safest destinations in the country.”
Agbo warned that the government would not tolerate the spread of falsehoods that undermine public confidence and security. He said anyone found to be involved in creating or disseminating fake news would face the full weight of the law.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that the safety and well‑being of Enugu people remain central to Gov. Mbah’s transformational development agenda.
“We therefore call on residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law‑abiding, while relying only on verified and credible sources of information regarding security matters in the state,” Agbo advised. (NAN)
