Six months after leaving Chippa United, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali decided to rejoin the Chilli boys in a surprising turn of events, Afrik Foot reports.
He had been linked with several clubs following his heroic performances for Nigeria at the 2025 AFCON, with Kaizer Chiefs, Simba SC, Raja Casablanca and even clubs in Saudi Arabia reportedly interested in his services.
Instead, the 30-year-old has returned to the same club he left five months ago.
However, beyond the initial surprise, there are compelling reasons why the move could prove to be the best decision for both his club and international career.

1. Chippa United offers stability after a difficult period
Football fans often forget that players are human beings first. According to Nwabali’s representative, Mohammed Lawal, the goalkeeper’s decision to step away from football earlier this year had little to do with transfers or contract disputes.
Instead, the goalkeeper was dealing with unimaginable personal grief after losing his grandmother, father and mother within a short period.
“After losing his parents, he became responsible for everything. There was a lot he needed to take care of,” Lawal told ESPN.

Lawal also revealed that the goalkeeper sought professional help and needed time away from the game to heal mentally.
In that context, returning to Chippa United suddenly makes perfect sense, considering the club already knows the mental state of their number one goalie.
“Another reason why he returned to Chippa United is that they already know him,” Lawal continued.
“At Chippa, everyone knows him. They understand him. Instead of starting from the bottom in a new environment, he is returning to a place where people know who he is.”
Mistakes aren’t always kind to goalkeepers, regardless of the situation in their personal lives.
Joining a new club after several months away from football would have brought additional pressure, adaptation challenges and immediate expectations.

“The chairman understood his situation because Stanley explained everything,” Lawal added.
2. Regular football is essential for his Super Eagles future
For goalkeepers, rhythm and continuity are everything. Five months without competitive football is a significant period, particularly for a player hoping to remain Nigeria’s number one.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi believes Nwabali made the correct choice.
“There is nothing wrong with his choice to return to Chippa, as they originally provided him with his platform,” Akpeyi told KickOff.

“It is customary that players need regular game time at their club to remain in contention for national team selection.
“Therefore, maintaining match fitness is crucial for him.”
Competition within the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department is increasing. Maduka Okoye enjoyed an impressive season in Italy, while Amas Obasogie, Arthur Okonkwo, and Francis Uzoho are all lurking in the shadows for a chance to prove themselves.
Eric Chelle may have supported Nwabali throughout his difficult period, but sentiment alone cannot guarantee a starting place.

That opportunity may not have existed elsewhere. Kaizer Chiefs eventually signed Renaldo Leaner, while clubs abroad may have viewed his lengthy absence from football as a risk.
For a goalkeeper entering his thirties, sitting on the bench or spending additional months searching for the ideal move would have damaged his international prospects.
A step backwards that could become a major step forward
From the outside, returning to Chippa United may look like a lack of ambition. In reality, it appears to be a carefully considered decision.
Nwabali himself hinted at this when he explained his departure earlier this year.
“It is best you are being comfortable and enjoying the moment,” he said.
“Football is something that deals with happiness, your happiness comes first.”
After enduring one of the most difficult periods of his life, prioritising stability and regular football may be exactly what the Super Eagles goalkeeper needs.

For now, Chippa United offers something perhaps even more important than a big-money transfer: understanding, familiarity and the chance to rebuild, and in many ways, that makes his return the right decision.
