South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim dies at 91

South African jazz pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim passed away on Monday at the age of 91, according to a statement released by his family in Germany.

The family said Ibrahim, who had released more than 70 albums, died peacefully while surrounded by relatives after a brief illness.

Ibrahim began performing professionally at 15 and was discovered in 1963 by American jazz legend Duke Ellington in a Zurich club. Two years later, he and his wife relocated to New York, where he occasionally led the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
