After awaiting their final Group A match, in which they defeated South Korea 1‑0 to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his players silenced the critics.
The African side, making its fourth World Cup appearance, finished second in Group A behind co‑hosts Mexico, who won all three matches.
South Africa, who last appeared in the tournament when they hosted it in 2010, were heavily dismissed following a 2‑0 defeat to Mexico in their opening game.
They earned a draw against the Czech Republic and finished top of a de‑facto shootout for second place in Monterrey, thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s second‑half goal.
“I’m very proud of my team’s performance, and I believe we answered the critics who insisted we needed to change something,” Broos said defiantly.
“We simply did what we did. We followed my plan, and this is the outcome.”
The 74‑year‑old, who has led the team since 2021, said reaching the second round was an emotional moment for South Africa.
“I have said before that this could be one of the final games of my career, and to finish in this manner is something every coach dreams of.”
Broos said he has always believed in his players despite harsh criticism.
“Between me as coach and them as players is something unique – I am a coach, but I am not just a coach,” he said.
“I consider myself a friend to them. The relationship between the players and me is very strong.”
South Africa will play Canada, one of the co‑hosts, in Los Angeles on Sunday, with a spot in the last 16 on the line.
“I know the players will be ready again and will aim to reach the third round,” Broos said.
“It could be even more historic. The players are chasing that goal. They want to prove themselves and demonstrate that they are a strong team. We will see next Sunday whether we can progress further.”
