South Africa Coach Criticizes Nicaragua’s Defensive Play After 0‑0 Friendly Draw

South Africa’s national team, the Bafana Bafana, drew 0‑0 with Nicaragua in a friendly on Friday, a result that prompted head coach Hugo Broos to criticize the opposition’s defensive strategy.

Lyle Foster struck the post from a penalty in the first half, while Oswin Appollis, Thapelo Maseko and Sphephelo Sithole each forced saves from Nicaragua goalkeeper Erick Castrillo in the second half.

Despite the chances, Bafana were unable to break through a Nicaraguan side that chose to sit back and defend for the full 90 minutes.

“I think we can be happy about the performance even if we didn’t win,” Broos told SABC Sport (via The Citizen). “If you play such a negative opponent it becomes very difficult. Those people came here for 90 minutes to defend, they were just kicking the ball in front. And at the end, there was one injury after another. They were very negative, and it was very difficult.”

“We missed a penalty; if we scored that I am sure there would be more goals. The opponent would have had to try something and they didn’t try anything.”

“I don’t know what the goal was of those people,” Broos continued. “It was very difficult for us to find space and we needed a bit of luck. We had a few chances but I am satisfied.”

Broos had also fielded an under‑strength side, giving his Sundowns players a rest after their Champions League win over AS FAR on Sunday.

He plans to field a stronger lineup for the final warm‑up match against Jamaica in Mexico on 5 June. South Africa will leave for Mexico on Sunday and head to their training base at altitude in Pachuca.

Broos on Jamaica – “I hope that opponent will play football against us”

The Bafana will open the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on 11 June.

“There is another game on 5 June against Jamaica and I hope that opponent will play football against us,” Broos said, adding another dig at Nicaragua. “Maybe that will be the first indication of the side that will start against Mexico.”
