Shooting at California World Cup fan zone leaves one dead and one wounded

Authorities reported that a shooting in San Pedro Square, a well‑known entertainment area in San Jose, California, on Sunday resulted in one fatality and left another person critically injured.

The incident took place at a venue that has been operating as a FIFA World Cup fan zone for the current tournament. Police noted that no match was being broadcast at the time, as the day’s sole game had concluded around 2 p.m. local time.

The San Jose Police Department said officers responded to gunfire reports at San Pedro Square and found two victims when they arrived.

The department posted on X that “One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life‑threatening injuries.”

A homicide investigation has been opened, and several streets around San Pedro Square were closed while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.

San Pedro Square is one of several official World Cup fan zones set up across the San Francisco Bay Area, drawing thousands of football fans to watch matches on large outdoor screens.

The Bay Area has hosted five FIFA World Cup matches to date, the latest being a knockout‑round game on Wednesday in which Bosnia played co‑host United States.

Witnesses noted a large police presence after the shooting, with several patrol vehicles and emergency responders arriving. A Reuters journalist saw paramedics moving one victim on a stretcher while officers cordoned off the area with police tape.

A security guard who saw the aftermath reported that the surviving victim seemed to have sustained serious injuries.

She added, “The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back,” noting that officers were talking with security staff and witnesses.

No arrests have been announced, and police have not revealed a motive as the investigation proceeds.
