Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has said that Nigerian filmmakers often prioritize beauty over talent when casting actresses.
Speaking in a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Rosman claimed that the emphasis on appearance is eroding genuine talent in Nollywood.
She noted that the demand for a particular look has led some actresses to undergo surgeries to enhance their beauty and physique.
"The majority of Nollywood filmmakers prioritize beauty over talent. There are good directors who value only talent, but to be honest, most prefer beauty to talent. That is why you see a lot of movie stars doing surgeries to enhance their bodies," she said.
Rosman said beauty has become “so overly glorified” in the movie industry and Nigerian society, to the extent that people are denied opportunities if they do not use makeup or undergo procedures such as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).
She alleged that some individuals who are unqualified for movie roles use their looks to secure parts.
Rosman urged filmmakers and industry practitioners to return to prioritizing talent for the future of the Nigerian movie industry.
