Vice‑President Kashim Shettima has pledged support for the passage of the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria (CGIN) Bill currently before the National Assembly, and for the ongoing construction of the national secretariat of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) in Lagos.

The CGIN Bill proposes renaming the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria to reflect contemporary governance practices and to broaden its scope beyond conventional secretarial functions.

He made the commitment while receiving a delegation of the Institute, led by its President and Governing Council Chairman, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

During the meeting, Mrs. Ukpanah briefed the Vice‑President on the Institute’s initiatives to deepen corporate governance, promote ethical leadership, and strengthen institutional capacity in both the public and private sectors of the economy.

She highlighted that the CGIN Bill is awaiting placement for a second reading in the National Assembly and argued that the legislation would reinforce governance practices, raise professional standards, and align Nigeria with emerging global governance norms.

“The institute is intended to become a centre for governance education, professional development, research, and stakeholder engagement,” she stated.

In response, the Vice‑President affirmed the importance of governance for national development and pledged his backing for efforts that strengthen institutions, improve regulatory frameworks, and promote transparency and accountability.
