On Tuesday, a truck carrying bottled water lost control and dumped its cargo at the busy Toll Gate area of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, sparing several commuters and other road users from serious injury.
Mr Salau Hammed, commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Ota Unit, confirmed that the crash happened at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Hammed reported that the vehicle was moving from the Ilo‑Awela area toward Toll Gate when the driver allegedly exceeded a safe speed, causing the truck to overturn and disperse its load across the roadway.
He added that no casualties or injuries were recorded.
The TRACE commander warned motorists against reckless driving and urged vehicle owners to keep their cars properly maintained before traveling.
“We thank God that no life was lost and nobody sustained injuries in the accident,” he said.
Hammed also called on commercial motorcyclists and roadside traders on highways to stop unsafe practices that could endanger lives.
He further cautioned commercial bus operators against indiscriminate parking and stopping on the highway to pick up passengers, noting that such behavior could increase the risk of collisions with articulated vehicles.
The commander reiterated TRACE’s commitment to strictly enforce traffic regulations along the Toll Gate corridor and other sections of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to reduce preventable accidents.
He added that TRACE officials, together with other emergency and traffic‑management agencies, were working to remove the overturned vehicle and restore free flow of traffic on the route.
