Seven members of a local vigilante group were killed when armed bandits attacked a security camp in Niger State.

The assault took place on Saturday at Matseri Camp in the Kotonkoro District of Mariga Local Government Area.

Security expert Bakatsine, who posted on X, said the attackers were believed to have come from the Sangeko area in neighbouring Zamfara State. They launched a surprise attack, opening fire on the security volunteers stationed at the camp.

Sources reported that the vigilantes returned fire, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle before being overwhelmed.

Bakatsine added that the security volunteers “killed several of the bandits during the exchange of gunfire.”

The incident heightens security concerns in parts of Niger and Zamfara States, where armed groups continue to target communities and security personnel.

At the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official statement on the incident.
