ABUJA – The Senate has urged the Federal Government to urgently prohibit the import of all foreign textile materials. The move aims to boost local cotton production and revive dormant textile industries across Nigeria.
Senate members called on the Federal Government, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Trade and Investment to accelerate the revival of the textile sector. They argued that a stronger domestic industry would create jobs for the unemployed, help curb youth restiveness, and reduce insecurity.
The chamber also requested that the Federal Government allocate additional funds to the Bank of Industry (BOI) specifically for textile projects. Furthermore, senators asked the Ministry of Agriculture to promote cotton farming, noting that cotton is essential for textile manufacturing.
These resolutions followed a motion titled “Urgent Need to Revive the Textile Industries in Nigeria with Particular Reference to the Kaduna‑Kano Axis.” The motion was sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshall, Katung (APC, Kaduna South) and co‑sponsored by Senators Adams Oshiomole (APC, Edo North), Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), Mustapha Khalid (Kaduna North), Mustapha Khabeeb (APC, Jigawa South West), and Natasha Akpoti‑Udughan.
Additional co‑sponsors included Senators Kawu Abdurrahman Suleiman (APC, Kano South), Simon Lalong (APC, Bako, Plateau South), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto South), Babangida Hussaini (APC, Jigawa North‑West), and Dandutse Mohammed (APC, Katsina South).
