The Senate has shortened its end‑of‑session break and ordered members to reconvene on Tuesday, June 23, with insecurity and the State Police Bill as the main items on the agenda.
A notice issued on Tuesday by the Clerk of the Senate, Dr Emmanuel Odo, on the instructions of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stated that there were “pressing matters of urgent national importance, including national security” that required immediate attention.
The notice urged senators to meet at the Red Chamber by 11 am.
It appears the reconvening is linked to the third reading and passage of the State Police Bill, which the House of Representatives has already approved.
Last Thursday, while the House passed the bill, the Senate only advanced it to second reading and postponed voting until lawmakers reconvene in the first week of July.
The bill was referred to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, for further legislative input.
The emergency reconvening is expected to allow the Senate to make critical decisions on national security matters before the July resumption date.
