A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has warned that Nigeria’s insecurity problem is not being addressed with the seriousness it warrants.
Sowunmi made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s “Day Break.”
He was responding to the death of former Nigerian military spokesman Major‑General Rabe Abubakar, retired, who was killed while in the custody of bandits.
According to Sowunmi, while the government urges Nigerians to remain patient and give its policies time to take effect, it must also recognize that ordinary citizens are confronted with hardship on a daily basis. He added that as time passes, frustration and agitation are bound to rise.
“We are dealing with individuals involved in violent attacks, but the situation has not been treated with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.
“Governors in affected areas have not shown enough urgency, and local governments have also fallen short in their response,” Sowunmi continued.
“Even public reaction has not reflected the level of outrage expected, especially after the loss of a senior military officer. Overall, the national response does not match the gravity of the situation,” he added.
