Security challenges require disciplined, intelligence‑driven policing.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 3 Headquarters, Yola, AIG Akinwale Kunle Adeniran, has instructed officers and men of the Taraba state police command to maintain professionalism, discipline, intelligence‑led policing, and ongoing capacity building while carrying out their duties.

Adeniran delivered the charge during a familiarization tour of the Taraba state Police Command on Thursday, where he gave a lecture to the command’s officers and personnel.

The lecture, aligned with Inspector‑General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s vision, focused on boosting operational effectiveness through professionalism, discipline, community intelligence gathering, school safety, public health awareness, weapon‑handling training, and collective action against insecurity.

The AIG noted that the country’s current security challenges demand a police force that is highly professional, disciplined, well‑trained, and intelligence‑driven, capable of responding swiftly to emerging threats while safeguarding lives and property.

He urged officers to intensify intelligence‑led policing, increase visibility patrols, collaborate with other security agencies, and respond promptly to distress calls, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility.

Adeniran also highlighted the importance of public health security, especially regarding Ebola and other communicable diseases. Given Taraba state’s proximity to international borders, he advised officers to stay vigilant, learn to recognize infectious disease symptoms, observe safety protocols, and work closely with health authorities.

On professionalism, the AIG stressed adherence to the rule of law, respect for fundamental human rights, integrity, accountability, and transparency. He warned against corruption and misconduct, noting that professional conduct is essential for building public trust and strengthening police‑community relations.

Describing discipline as the foundation of effective policing, Adeniran urged officers to uphold high standards of personal and professional conduct by obeying lawful orders, respecting the chain of command, maintaining proper appearance, and demonstrating punctuality and self‑control.

He further underscored the value of community intelligence and information gathering for crime prevention and detection. According to him, stronger partnerships with community leaders and stakeholders, protection of informants, and effective implementation of community policing strategies are critical to improving security outcomes.

Addressing school safety, the AIG reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the Safe School Initiative. He directed officers to conduct regular security assessments of educational institutions, strengthen liaison with school authorities, and establish effective emergency response mechanisms to protect students, teachers, and school facilities.

Adeniran also stressed the need for continuous training and retraining of personnel, particularly in weapon handling and operational procedures. He said officers must remain proficient in firearm safety, weapon maintenance, rules of engagement, tactical operations, patrol duties, checkpoint management, and public order management.

He expressed confidence that through professionalism, discipline, teamwork, and adherence to best policing practices, officers of the Taraba State Police Command will continue to strengthen public confidence, improve security, and contribute to the peace and development of the state and the country.
