Why this year’s Biafra anniversary is very significant

The 2024 anniversary marks 60 years since the start of the Nigerian Civil War (the Biafran War), which began on 6 July 1967 when the southeastern region declared the Republic of Biafra. The 60‑year milestone revives intense debate over the war’s legacy, lingering grievances, and renewed calls for Biafran self‑determination, especially as younger activists and diaspora groups use social media and political movements (e.g., IPOB) to push for recognition, reparations, and possible secession. The anniversary is therefore significant both as a historic remembrance and as a flashpoint for contemporary ethnic, political, and humanitarian discussions in Nigeria and among the global Biafran diaspora.
