First 300 Ghanaians leave S’Africa after xenophobic tensions

In early September 2023, the first 300 Ghanaian workers and students were escorted out of South Africa after a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals. The South African government, responding to violent protests and looting that left several foreigners injured, arranged for the Ghanaian embassy to coordinate the safe departure of its citizens, who had been working in sectors such as construction, hospitality and informal trade. The evacuation marked the initial phase of a larger repatriation effort for Ghanaian nationals amid heightened anti‑immigrant sentiment in the country. Views Nigeria
