Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital and largest city is Chișinău. Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and is a parliamentary republic. The population is about 2.6 million, and the official language is Romanian (often called Moldovan). The economy relies on agriculture, especially wine production, and it is one of Europe’s poorest nations.
