Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo. Its capital and largest city is Accra. Ghana gained independence from Britain in 1957 as the first sub‑Saharan nation to do so, and it is known for its stable democracy, diverse cultures, gold and cocoa production, and historic sites such as the coastal forts of Elmina and Cape Coast.
