Two women escape jungle justice in Akwa Ibom

In June 2024 two women who had been detained by a local “jungle court” in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, were freed after a court ordered their release. The informal tribunal, run by community elders, had sentenced them to flogging for alleged moral offences. Human‑rights groups and the state government intervened, declaring the punishment illegal and securing the women’s freedom. Views Nigeria
