Makinde: Federal system may not work in 2027
Rotimi Makinde, a senior member of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party, warned that the country’s current federal structure could prove ineffective by the 2027 general elections. He argued that persistent power imbalances between the central government and the states, coupled with inadequate fiscal decentralisation and weak inter‑governmental coordination, risk undermining national cohesion and effective governance. Makinde called for constitutional reforms to strengthen state autonomy, improve revenue sharing, and create clearer mechanisms for cooperation, saying without such changes the federal system may “not work” when the next election cycle arrives.
