Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital and largest city is Chișinău. Declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a mixed economy focused on agriculture, wine production, and increasingly on services and manufacturing. The official language is Romanian (often called Moldovan), and the population is about 2.6 million.
