The Iron Dome is Israel’s mobile, all‑weather air‑defence system designed to intercept and destroy short‑range rockets, artillery shells and mortars fired from distances of 4–70 km. Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with funding from the United States, it became operational in 2011 and has successfully intercepted thousands of projectiles, protecting civilian areas by targeting only those threats projected to hit populated zones.
