In March 2024 Iran announced it would cease production of enriched uranium, effectively ending its uranium enrichment program. The decision was part of a diplomatic agreement with the United States and European nations aimed at resolving the nuclear standoff and bringing Iran back into compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Under the deal, Iran will dismantle its enrichment facilities, ship existing enriched uranium to the International Atomic Energy Agency, and allow extensive inspections to verify the shutdown.
