Court invalidates parts of INEC timetable, affirming constitutional
In June 2024 Nigeria’s Supreme Court struck down several provisions of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) election timetable, ruling that they violated the Constitution. The Court held that the dates for voter registration, party primaries and the issuance of voting cards could not be set by the commission without legislative approval, and it ordered INEC to revise the schedule in line with constitutional requirements. The decision affirmed the principle that electoral timelines must be established by law, not solely by administrative decree. Views Nigeria
