In recent years Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria has experienced a series of violent attacks on schools, most notably the March 2022 assault on the Federal Government College in Iwo where gunmen killed three teachers and set fire to classrooms, and the June 2023 raid on a private secondary school in Ibadan that resulted in the kidnapping of several students and the death of a security guard.
