Israel is a Middle‑Eastern country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, established in 1948 as a Jewish state. It borders Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Jerusalem is its proclaimed capital (though most foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv). Israel has a highly developed economy, strong technology and defense sectors, and a diverse population of Jews, Arabs, and other minorities. Its political system is a parliamentary democracy.
