Two women escape jungle justice in Akwa Ibom
In June 2024 two women who had been detained by a local “jungle court” in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, managed to flee the makeshift courtroom hidden in the forest. The informal tribunal, run by community elders, had sentenced them to harsh punishments for alleged moral offenses. Their escape sparked criticism of the illegal “jungle justice” system and prompted calls from human‑rights groups for stronger legal protection and enforcement of due process in the state.
