At the inauguration of Benin’s new president, Patrice Talon, on 6 May 2024, Nigeria’s Vice‑President Kashim Shettima attended and used the occasion to reinforce bilateral ties. He highlighted cooperation on security, trade, energy and cross‑border infrastructure, reaffirmed the commitment to the Nigeria‑Benin Joint Commission, and pledged continued collaboration to combat insecurity in the Niger River basin and boost economic integration between the two neighboring countries.
