Iran intercepts U.S.-made weapons carried by Iraqi groups

In March 2024 Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that it had intercepted and seized a shipment of U.S.-made weapons—primarily small arms and ammunition—being smuggled through Iraq to militia groups allied with Tehran. The weapons, reportedly sourced from U.S. surplus stockpiles, were intercepted by Iranian forces near the Iran‑Iraq border, and Iran said the seizure prevented the arms from reaching Iraqi paramilitary factions that could use them against Iranian interests.
