The Iron Dome is an Israeli mobile air‑defence system designed to intercept and destroy short‑range rockets, artillery shells, and mortars fired toward populated areas. Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, it became operational in 2011 and uses radar to detect incoming projectiles, a battle‑management computer to calculate trajectories, and Tamir interceptor missiles to neutralize threats that are headed for civilian zones.
