Researchers at Nigeria’s Defence Academy say people join terrorist groups mainly because of poverty, unemployment, and lack of education, which make extremist ideologies seem attractive. They also cite feelings of marginalisation, corruption, and weak governance that erode trust in the state, as well as the lure of financial rewards, social status, and a sense of belonging offered by militant networks.
