Why Idoma Has Not Produced a Benue Governor

Idoma politicians have repeatedly contested Benue’s governorship but have never won because the state’s electoral dynamics are dominated by the larger Tiv and Igala populations, who together command a bigger voting bloc and more influential party structures. Party primaries often favor Tiv or Igala candidates, and intra‑state power‑sharing agreements historically allocate the governorship to those groups, leaving Idoma candidates at a numerical and political disadvantage despite occasional strong individual contenders.
