Court invalidates parts of INEC timetable, affirming constitutional
In June 2024 Nigeria’s Supreme Court struck down several provisions of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) election timetable, ruling that they violated the Constitution. The Court held that the dates for voter registration, party primaries and the issuance of voting materials could not be set by INEC without legislative approval, and it ordered the commission to revise the schedule in line with constitutional requirements. The decision affirmed the judiciary’s role in ensuring electoral processes adhere to the 1999 Constitution. Views Nigeria
