Researchers at Nigeria’s Defence Academy say people join terrorist groups mainly because of poverty, unemployment, and lack of education, which make them vulnerable to recruitment. They are also drawn by promises of money, social status, and a sense of belonging, as well as grievances over government corruption, marginalisation, and perceived injustice.
