Iran intercepts U.S.-made weapons carried by Iraqi groups
In March 2024 Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had intercepted and seized a shipment of U.S.-made weapons that had been smuggled into Iraq and was intended for Iraqi militia groups allied with Tehran. The cache, reportedly including rifles, ammunition and other small arms, was seized by Iranian forces near the Iran‑Iraq border, and Tehran said the operation prevented the weapons from reaching the militias and underscored its claim of protecting national security against foreign arms transfers.
