Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced that he will retire from professional football when his contract ends in June 2026, after doctors advised him that a serious shoulder injury would prevent him from playing at the highest level.

Schmeichel’s career, which spanned almost twenty years, included a place in the historic Leicester City side that won the Premier League in 2016. He later captained Leicester to an FA Cup and a Community Shield victory in 2021.

The son of former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, he earned 120 caps for Denmark, representing his country at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.

Schmeichel said the decision to end his career early was difficult but he expressed gratitude for his achievements and the length of his playing days.

‘When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career. It is a decision that has been made for me,’ Schmeichel told TV 2 Sport in Parken.

‘I have consulted with various surgeons and experts about my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to top‑level football. I have thought a lot, but I believe that now is the right time.’

‘I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the pitch, but you don’t always get what you want,’ he continued.

‘I’ve got so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I have been given so many opportunities and experiences.’

Schmeichel’s Best Performance

Schmeichel’s most celebrated performances include his clean‑sheet display in the 2021 FA Cup Final against Chelsea and his record‑breaking penalty‑saving record for Denmark, where he saved 23 of 91 penalties faced.

His ability to dominate in high‑stakes matches, such as during the 2015/16 title‑winning season, defines his top‑level performances.
