Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo‑Olu praised President Bola Tinubu after the Senate approved the constitutional amendment bill that would create state police forces.
In a statement dated Thursday, Sanwo‑Olu called the Senate’s endorsement of the bill’s 26 provisions a landmark moment for Nigeria’s democratic and security progress.
He said the passage marks one of the most important changes to the country’s security framework, with the potential to strengthen community policing and enhance public safety.
The governor described the parliamentary approval as “epochal,” adding that it further reflected Tinubu’s long‑standing commitment to genuine federalism and progressive governance.
“Today is a great day for our country and a moment to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” Sanwo‑Olu remarked.
He noted that the president has consistently advocated for state police since his tenure as Lagos governor from 1999 to 2007, despite opposition from various quarters.
“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999, when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria today,” he added.
Sanwo‑Olu said the proposed state police structure would significantly enhance efforts to counter terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities that threaten national development and stability.
He praised the president’s vision, resilience and steadfast dedication to reforms that deepen federalism and improve governance outcomes across the federation.
The governor also lauded the Senate for what he called a historic decision and urged state houses of assembly to accelerate the bill’s consideration and passage.
“The Senate has made history with this bold step. I urge the state assemblies to follow suit and ensure this important constitutional amendment becomes a reality,” he said. (NAN)
